Chaos / Or My Souls in the Water: I recorded beluga whales
at the New York Aquarium. In spite of the lifeless tank in which
they continuously circled, these creatures were beautiful and serene.
This
work addresses the societal confines in which we live, the inhumane
world in which we sometimes find ourselves, and the struggle to retain
a connection to our basic nature.
Four monitors are placed behind a partition in the corners of
the room, making the space octagonal. The monitors play the same
tape in a "round" offset by 5 seconds, creating a circular
sound and visual pattern in the room. The floor echoes this motion
in a yellow spiral of projected light. The walls resemble an underwater
dancing light pattern. It plays at a continual loop. |
